Report on the Results of the Fiscal Year Reiwa 4 (2022) Research and Survey Project on Okinotorishima and Minamitorishima Islands

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has conducted three research studies by soliciting research proposals from researchers belonging to universities, research institutes, and private companies to deepen research studies leading to the maintenance, conservation, and utilization of Okinotorishima Islands, Minamitorishima Island, and surrounding sea areas, and to contribute to the care and development of Tokyo's urban capacity and the lives of Tokyo residents. We are pleased to announce that we have compiled a report on the research results conducted in fiscal year Reiwa 4 (April 2022 - March 2023.)

Practice Type A

Research organization to
which the proposer belongs
IDEA Consultants, Inc.
Theme Maintenance and conservation of islands and surrounding sea areas,
utilization of fishery resources, utilization of seabed and seawater resources
Title Research survey to understand seafloor topography and
biota in the sea area around Okinotorishima Islands
Summary The accumulation of scientific information and knowledge
on the marine environment and ecosystem is essential for the maintenance,
conservation, and utilization of Okinotorishima Islands and the surrounding sea area, which has
a unique background as an isolated island in the sea with no surrounding marine islands.
Therefore, this project aims to clarify the origin of Okinotorishima Islands,
undersea mineral resources, and the surrounding sea area's biodiversity
and contribute to the future utilization of the island.

Practice Type B

Research organization to
which the proposer belongs
JAMSTEC Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science
and Technology
Theme Utilization of fishery resources
Title Creation of fishery management information using a model
for estimating potential fishing grounds in the waters
around Okinotorishima and Minamitorishima Islands
Summary In order to obtain food resources while preserving the marine environment,
creation of scientific information including estimation and prediction of
the marine environment and the distribution of organisms are required.
This project aims to develop a method to estimate potential fishing grounds for
pelagic fish species around Okinotorishima and Minamitorishima Islands, and create scientific
knowledge necessary for efficient and sustainable fishing and EEZ management.

Practice Type C

Research organization to
which the proposer belongs
The University of Tokyo
Theme Items that contribute to the maintenance, conservation, utilization, etc.,
of the island and surrounding sea area
Title Geo-ecological engineering maintenance of the islands based on the collection
and organization of scientific information on
Okinotorishima and Minamitorishima Islands
Summary To maintain and conserve Okinotorishima and Minamitorishima Islands, it is essential
that review the scientific information obtained to assist in future efforts.
Therefore, the purpose of this project is to collect, organize,
and review published papers, reports, observation records, nautical charts,
and other historical documents related to the two islands and the surrounding sea area from
the perspective of island geo-ecological engineering maintenance,
and to present proposals for maintenance and conservation measures for the two islands and
future research and studies necessary for this purpose.
